If you have the proper plans onhow to make a windmill it can be done without having to buy an expensive commercial one.
As we have stated before already, it is not very hard to build wind turbines and a lot of folks out there undertake that challenge to save some energy costs.
You should really do some research before you start the DIY wind turbine challenge and not just buy the first instructional manual on how to make a homemade windmill, since you usually get what you pay for.
We have done quite a bit of research before we actually started building our wind generator. We found a guide on how to make a windmill generator, that was easy to read and follow with detailed instructions as well as videos, which show exactly how to make a windmill at home.
There are a lot of online resources around – incl. forums, all full of valuable information, which is where we found our how to make a working windmill guide.
Now here are some basic things, you have to familiarize yourself with, before even starting to build your own windmill.
- In order to learn how to build a working windmill you need to know about the towers, the batteries, the turbines, the tail and the proper assembly.
- Some of the simple tools you need to build wind turbines are wrenches, a saw and a drill. Depending on what kind of windmill you are planing to build, there might be some additional tools necessary.
One part that you might have to buy is the motor, we were lucky enough, as we could acquire a really cheap one, in great shape from our local scrap guy.
The motors on wind turbines need regular maintenance and oiling to be efficient and it also extends their life considerably. But they will provide an excellent and cheap energy supply for years to come.
Having a big space to work is definitly a plus.
Remember, depending on how much energy you would like to generate, your blades might be up to 8 feet in diameter (4 ft blades).
All in all we can say, that it takes a little work to build a windmill, but it’s not really complicated and it can be done fairly inexpensive.
Once you are up and running, the dropping electric bills make up the time, you had to spend.
If you know how to make a windmill and you have done it once or twice, you might even be considering it as a second income source, as building wind turbines becomes a fast growing occupation, while good and cheap technicians are hard to find.

Before thinking closer about how to make a windmill, we’ll give you a quick overview on the conditions, that should be met before starting to make a windmill at home:
- Your property should be at least 1 acre. Wind turbine solutions need some space
- The average wind speed in your area should be around 11 miles per hour. If your location has little wind flow, the wind energy system can not work. Talk to a professional before taking on the task on building a homemade windmill.
- You have to be able to get water from an external source. Or you can use your well water, if you have one. But if you need to draw water from outside a wind power system is the best solution.
- If you need uninterrupted power for your house and want to combat the power outages the pollution-free wind power system is the solutions for you.
A wind power system needs to have a tower and five blades to churn out wind energy. The hight of the wind tower depends on where your home is located. A higher tower is necessary, if you are in low-wind zone; the windier your location, the shorter the tower needs to be.
With a wind generator, the wind energy is being converted to electricity, so you can run your electrical appliances. If you don’t need all the power generated right away, it can be stored for a later use. This alone makes a windmill a lot more efficient than conventional power.
In case you didn’t know, the terms wind mills, wind turbines, and wind generators refer to the same machine.
